In a bold stride towards infrastructure modernization, the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) has initiated a groundbreaking project to replace overhead power lines with underground cables across Greater Hyderabad. This transformative initiative aligns with the directives of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, aiming to bolster the city’s power reliability, enhance public safety, and elevate its aesthetic appeal.
Redefining Safety and Aesthetics
The underground cabling project addresses long-standing challenges posed by overhead lines, including public safety concerns, frequent disruptions due to weather conditions, and visual clutter. By transitioning to underground cables, Hyderabad’s skyline will be freed from a web of wires, improving the city’s visual appeal and creating a safer and more efficient power distribution network.
Speaking about the project, TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Ali Faruqui stated, “This initiative will not only enhance the reliability of our power network but will also redefine Hyderabad’s image as a global city with modern infrastructure. We are committed to executing this project with precision and efficiency.”
Call for Experienced Partners
To ensure successful execution, TGSPDCL has invited capable and experienced parties to participate in an Expression of Interest (EOI) process. Companies with expertise in underground cabling, particularly those that have executed similar projects in large cities or internationally, are encouraged to apply. Details regarding the EOI are available on TGSPDCL’s official website, tgsouthernpower.org.
Existing Power Infrastructure
Hyderabad’s current power network comprises a mix of underground and overhead cables, substations, and distribution infrastructure. Key statistics highlight the vast scope of the city’s power grid:
- 33/11 KV Substations: 498
- 33 KV Underground Cable (UG): 1,280 km
- 33 KV Overhead Line (OH): 3,725 km
- Power Transformers (PTRs): 1,022
- 11 KV UG Cable: 957 km
- 11 KV OH Line: 21,643 km
- Distribution Transformers (DTRs): 150,992
- Intermediate Poles: 58,271
The underground cabling project aims to significantly reduce overhead infrastructure, minimizing the risks posed by weather events and accidents.
A Vision for a Global City
This initiative is a key component of Hyderabad’s broader vision to emerge as a global city with world-class infrastructure. The project will not only enhance the city’s safety and power delivery but also improve its reputation as a hub of innovation and modernization.
By eliminating overhead lines and introducing a robust underground power network, TGSPDCL is ensuring Hyderabad’s transformation into a safer, more efficient, and visually appealing city. This forward-thinking initiative promises to elevate the quality of life for residents and position Hyderabad among the ranks of global cities with advanced infrastructure.
A Landmark Move
The underground cabling project reflects TGSPDCL’s commitment to addressing the city’s growing infrastructure demands while adhering to international standards. As the project takes off, it is expected to serve as a model for other cities, reinforcing Hyderabad’s status as a leader in urban development.
