Telangana High Court Bans Children Under 16 from Late-Night Movie Shows

Hyderabad: In a landmark decision, the Telangana High Court has issued orders prohibiting children under the age of 16 from attending films in theaters or multiplexes across the state after 11 PM. The court’s decision comes in response to concerns raised over the impact of late-night movie viewing on children’s physical and emotional well-being.
Justice B Vijaysen Reddy, presiding over a bench on January 27, addressed the issue while hearing petitions related to the increase in movie ticket prices and permissions for special late-night shows. The court emphasized that allowing children to attend movies during late hours could adversely affect their health and overall development.
In consultation with child psychologists and other stakeholders, the court also recommended that the state government regulate the entry of children under 16 into theaters and multiplexes during early morning (before 11 AM) and late-night (after 11 PM) hours.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s attorney argued that late-night screenings could disrupt children’s sleep patterns, hinder their emotional stability, and increase screen time, which is already a growing concern in the digital age. Acknowledging these arguments, the court ruled to restrict minors from late-night shows and advised the government to issue guidelines for compliance.
The court stressed the need for balanced regulations to protect children’s health while ensuring fair practices for theater operators. Justice Reddy noted the importance of prioritizing the well-being of younger audiences over commercial interests.
The court has scheduled the next hearing on the matter for February 22, during which further directives on ticket pricing and show timings are expected to be discussed.
This decision is expected to have a significant impact on cinema operators and families across Telangana, sparking discussions about the responsibilities of parents and the entertainment industry in safeguarding children’s welfare.
