Stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj Leaves 30 Women Injured

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh – A stampede-like situation unfolded on Wednesday morning at the Maha Kumbh during the auspicious Mauni Amavasya, leaving around 30 women injured as they made their way toward the Sangam for the sacred Amrit Snan. The incident occurred amid an overwhelming surge of millions of devotees gathered for the holy dip, leading Akharas to temporarily call off the event.

Chaos Near Sangam as Barricades Break

The commotion erupted nearly a kilometer from the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers when barricades gave way under the immense pressure of the crowd. Panic spread quickly, and several women fainted in the crush of people. As they fell, a stampede-like situation developed, making it difficult for devotees to regain their footing.

Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying moments. Jay Prakash Swami, who was present at the scene, described the ordeal:

“She got trapped under the crowd and couldn’t get up. We were all stuck. I managed to get out first, then helped the children, my father, and finally my mother.”

Vidhya Sahu, a devotee from Belgavi, Karnataka, also shared her experience:

“We were just walking when people behind us started pushing. There was a pole ahead, and everyone got stuck near it.”

Immediate Medical Response and Crowd Control Measures

Authorities swiftly responded by rushing the injured to medical facilities. Those with minor injuries were treated at a nearby hospital within the Maha Kumbh fairgrounds, while more serious cases were transferred to Bailey Hospital and Swaroop Rani Medical College for advanced care.

To prevent further incidents, a crowd diversion plan was implemented, halting the entry of additional devotees. Groups of pilgrims were stopped on the outskirts of the city, and security personnel intensified measures to manage the massive turnout.

Rare ‘Triveni Yog’ Fuels Pilgrim Rush

The Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya holds deep spiritual significance, and this year’s ritual carried even greater importance due to the rare ‘Triveni Yog’—a celestial alignment that occurs once every 144 years. This rare astrological event has amplified the devotion and enthusiasm of pilgrims, leading to an unprecedented influx of worshippers.

Authorities have urged devotees to remain cautious and follow safety protocols as the Maha Kumbh continues. Enhanced crowd management strategies are being put in place to prevent any further incidents.

Looking Ahead

Despite the unfortunate turn of events, the faith and devotion of pilgrims remain unwavering. Officials assure that all necessary precautions are now in place to ensure the safety of millions who continue to flock to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh’s sacred rituals.
