Mumbai: The recent stabbing of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has taken an unexpected turn, with the Association of Medical Consultants Mumbai raising concerns about the swift insurance claim disbursement for his treatment. What initially appeared to be an incident of heroism by the actor, who intervened to save his house help during a burglary at his Bandra home, is now under scrutiny for alleged preferential treatment in healthcare insurance procedures.

The Association of Medical Consultants Mumbai has written to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), questioning why insurance company Niva Bupa swiftly approved a claim of ₹25 lakhs for Saif Ali Khan’s treatment at Lilavati Hospital without standard procedural requirements.

According to the letter, the claim was approved within hours, bypassing the usual protocol of requiring an FIR in medicolegal cases. The association expressed concerns about favoritism, pointing out that ordinary individuals often face delays and rigorous scrutiny before receiving similar approvals.

Health insurance expert Nikhil Jha shared the letter on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “The normal process is to ask for an FIR copy in medicolegal cases. The insurance company waived off this requirement and immediately approved the cashless request for ₹25 lakhs. The final bill, reportedly ₹36 lakhs, was also approved.”

He further alleged discrepancies in the billing process, questioning how a four-day stay and surgery could result in such an exorbitant cost. “If this was a regular citizen, the company would have applied reasonable and customary charges, making it harder to claim the full amount. IRDAI must explain why Niva Bupa gave preferential treatment to a celebrity,” Jha wrote.

The Incident: A Brave Act of Heroism

The stabbing occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Saif Ali Khan’s residence in Bandra. Reports indicate that Saif woke up around 2:15 a.m. to the sound of a commotion in his younger son Jeh’s room. Upon entering, he found a burglar attacking their house help. The actor intervened with his bare hands to protect the staff, sustaining six stab wounds in the process, two of which are reported to be serious as they are close to his spine.

Bhajan Lal Singh Rana, an auto-rickshaw driver, played a critical role in rushing Saif to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent surgery and received treatment. The Mumbai Police have since arrested a suspect, reportedly a Bangladeshi national, who is now under investigation.

Public Outrage and Questions of Equity

The controversy has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many questioning the disparity in treatment between celebrities and ordinary citizens. Critics argue that such instances highlight the systemic inequities in the healthcare and insurance sectors, where influential figures are often prioritized over the common man.

Meanwhile, the IRDAI has yet to respond to the association’s letter or address the growing concerns. The incident has reignited discussions about transparency and fairness in India’s healthcare insurance policies, especially in high-profile cases.

As the investigation into the burglary continues, the focus now shifts to the regulatory authorities, who are expected to clarify the alleged favoritism in insurance claim processes.
