Meat Shops to Remain Closed in Hyderabad on 30 January

Hyderabad: In observance of Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary on January 30, all slaughterhouses, retail meat, and beef shops within the limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will remain closed. The directive was issued by GHMC Commissioner K. Ilambarithi under Section 533 (b) of the GHMC Act, 1955.

The order aims to honor the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated on this day in 1948 by Nathuram Godse. The closure applies to all sheep, goat, and cattle slaughterhouses as well as retail meat outlets across the city.

To ensure strict implementation of the directive, the GHMC has sought the support of the city’s police commissionerates. Commissioner Ilambarithi urged police officials to extend necessary assistance to GHMC staff in enforcing the ban for the day.

Authorities have appealed to meat shop owners and the general public to cooperate with the directive, emphasizing that such measures are taken as a mark of respect for the Father of the Nation.

Similar restrictions on meat sales and slaughterhouses have been enforced in previous years on significant occasions, including Gandhi Jayanti and other national observances.
