Hyderabad Metro Rail Unveils New Projects from JBS and Medchal to Airport

Hyderabad: In a landmark move to enhance public transportation in Hyderabad, the Metro Rail authorities have announced the development of an integrated metro hub at Jubilee Bus Station (JBS). This ambitious project aims to improve connectivity across northern Hyderabad by integrating the Paradise-Medchal and JBS-Shamirpet metro corridors with the existing metro network.

The project promises seamless public transportation across the city, bolstering Hyderabad’s urban mobility infrastructure.

50-Km Seamless Metro Connectivity

The planned integration is set to create a robust 50-km metro corridor stretching from Patancheru to Hayathnagar. The project includes the construction of Corridor VII, a 13.4-km stretch from Miyapur to Patancheru, as part of the Metro’s second phase. When combined with the 7.1-km LB Nagar to Hayathnagar extension and the operational Miyapur to LB Nagar Corridor I, this new development will establish a unified, uninterrupted metro route.

Overcoming Engineering Challenges

The metro expansion has not been without its challenges. To navigate the steep curvature of roads and existing infrastructure between Paradise and Bowenpally, innovative engineering solutions have been devised. Notably, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) elevated corridor will pass below the Begumpet Airport runway through a 600-meter tunnel.

However, this unique alignment requires the Metro route to dip and rise, adding complexities to construction. Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) Managing Director NVS Reddy, along with a team of senior engineers and consultants, conducted detailed inspections to refine the alignment.

Chief Minister’s Vision for Public Transport

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has championed the initiative, proposing the integration of the Paradise-Medchal and JBS-Shamirpet Metro corridors as a single route initially, with plans to split them into two separate routes in the future. Inspections along key roads, including JBS-Secunderabad Club Road, Mudfort Road, and Tivoli Junction Road, have been conducted to finalize a feasible alignment.

Innovative Solutions for Maximum Efficiency

To avoid tunneling under Begumpet Airport, the project team proposed merging the two corridors at JBS. This alignment will utilize the widened medians of service roads to minimize disruptions to the ongoing construction of National Highway (NH) flyovers.

The proposed alignment will ultimately create a 60-km Metro corridor connecting Medchal, JBS, Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), Chandrayangutta, and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, offering an extensive and efficient transit solution for commuters.

Transforming JBS into a Mega Metro Hub

Plans are in place to develop Jubilee Bus Station into a mega integrated Metro hub, catering to the transportation and logistical needs of Secunderabad and northern Hyderabad. Approximately 30 acres of land, including government and Defence properties, will be allocated for this purpose.

This state-of-the-art hub will provide seamless connectivity between Metro corridors, buses, and other transit systems, making it a key junction for urban mobility in Hyderabad.

A Step Towards a Connected Hyderabad

This ambitious project underscores Hyderabad Metro’s commitment to expanding its network and strengthening the city’s public transport system. Once completed, it will ease travel for thousands of residents, reduce traffic congestion, and contribute to the city’s sustainable development goals.

With strategic planning and innovative engineering, the Jubilee Bus Station Metro hub is set to become a transformative milestone in Hyderabad’s journey toward becoming a well-connected metropolitan city.
