Hyderabad: CM Revanth Reddy Lays Foundation for New Osmania General Hospital Amid Protests
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new Osmania General Hospital (OGH) building

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new Osmania General Hospital (OGH) building at the police grounds in Goshamahal, despite ongoing protests from the Goshamahal Parirakshana Samithi and heritage activists.
Accompanied by Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and Roads & Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, the Chief Minister officially launched the Rs. 2,700 crore project, which is expected to be completed within two years. The new facility will be built over 26 acres of land and will have a capacity of 2,000 beds to enhance healthcare infrastructure in the city.
However, the decision has sparked opposition from activists and local groups, citing concerns over traffic congestion, environmental impact, and heritage preservation. The existing Osmania General Hospital, a historic structure, is currently the subject of a legal battle in the High Court, with heritage activists advocating for its restoration rather than relocation.
To address these concerns, the government has chosen an alternate site for the new hospital building, utilizing police grounds in Goshamahal. The remaining 11 acres of land in the area are expected to be allocated for police department use.
Despite protests, the state government remains firm on its decision, emphasizing the need for a modern healthcare facility to meet the growing demands of Hyderabad’s population. The project aims to provide advanced medical services while balancing urban development challenges.
Authorities are expected to hold further discussions with stakeholders to address the concerns raised by citizens and activists.
