GHMC Cracks Down on Unlicensed Meat Shops in Greater Hyderabad

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated a crackdown on unlicensed meat shops across the city.

Action Taken After Public Complaints and Concerns Over Hygiene and Safety

Hyderabad: In a significant move to ensure public health and safety, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated a crackdown on unlicensed meat shops across the city. This action comes in response to numerous public complaints regarding hygiene issues and the sale of substandard meat products.

Widespread Non-Compliance Identified

GHMC officials have identified over 30,000 meat shops operating without the necessary trade licenses in Greater Hyderabad. Notices have been issued to 5,730 establishments dealing in chicken, mutton, and beef, highlighting violations of health and safety regulations.

Hygiene Concerns and Public Safety

Investigations revealed that many unlicensed shops lacked adequate sanitation facilities. Instances of stale and spoiled meat being stored and sold were documented, posing significant health risks. Additionally, some shops were found selling meat without the official GHMC stamp of approval, contravening city regulations.

Authorities have expressed concern over the increasing incidents of food poisoning linked to poor hygiene in these establishments. “The shops identified were operating under unsanitary conditions, and the meat being sold was not fit for consumption,” stated a GHMC official. “We have acted swiftly to ensure that the public is protected from any health hazards.”

Warnings and Future Action

The GHMC has mandated that unlicensed shops improve their practices and obtain the necessary licenses. Authorities have made it clear that failure to comply will result in permanent closure of these establishments. This crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to enhance food safety and prevent foodborne illnesses in the city.

Residents of Greater Hyderabad are urged to exercise caution when purchasing meat and to report any suspicious or unhygienic establishments to the relevant authorities.
