BJP Secures Historic Victory in Delhi Elections, Ends AAP’s Reign After 10 Years

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stormed back to power in Delhi after 26 years, decisively ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule.

New Delhi: In a landmark electoral shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stormed back to power in Delhi after 26 years, decisively ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule. The 2025 Delhi Assembly election saw several high-profile defeats for AAP, including its chief and three-term Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with key leaders like Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain.

Major Upsets for AAP

Arvind Kejriwal, who led AAP to three consecutive victories in Delhi since 2013, lost his New Delhi seat to BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh by a margin of 4,089 votes. This marks a significant setback for Kejriwal, who has been at the helm of Delhi politics for over a decade.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, contesting from Jangpura, was defeated by BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by 675 votes, reflecting the growing dissatisfaction with AAP’s leadership.

Another major loss came in Shakur Basti, where senior AAP leader Satyendar Jain was defeated by BJP’s Karnail Singh by a margin of 20,998 votes. Similarly, AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj, who was leading initially in Greater Kailash, lost to BJP’s Shikha Roy by 3,139 votes.

In Patparganj, Awadh Ojha, who replaced Sisodia, suffered a crushing defeat to BJP’s Ravinder Singh Negi by a margin of 28,072 votes.

Other AAP leaders, including Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla and former minister Somnath, also lost their respective seats, cementing the party’s dismal performance in these elections.

AAP’s Few Victories Amid Defeat

Despite the setbacks, AAP managed to secure a few key wins. Atishi, the outgoing Chief Minister, won the Kalkaji seat, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’s Alka Lamba. Additionally, AAP leaders Gopal Rai, Mukesh Ahlawat, and Imran Hussain retained their seats in Babarpur, Sultanpur Majra, and Ballimaran, respectively.

Gopal Rai won with a margin of 18,994 votes, Mukesh Ahlawat secured Sultanpur Majra with a 17,126-vote lead, and Imran Hussain triumphed in Ballimaran with a commanding 29,823-vote lead.

BJP Set to Form Government in Delhi

With BJP securing a majority in the 70-member assembly, the party is set to form the government in Delhi after more than two decades. This victory marks a significant shift in the national capital’s political landscape, with the saffron party regaining its lost ground.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders have hailed the win as a triumph of “good governance and development.” The results indicate a changing voter sentiment, with BJP capitalizing on anti-incumbency and a strong campaign focused on infrastructure, law and order, and nationalistic appeal.

As BJP prepares to take charge of Delhi, the coming months will be crucial in shaping the city’s future under a new leadership after AAP’s decade-long dominance.
