Aadhaar-Based Biometric Verification Now Mandatory for New SIM Cards in India

New Delhi: The Indian government has made Aadhaar-based biometric verification mandatory for acquiring new SIM cards, a move aimed at tackling the misuse of mobile connections in fraudulent activities. This decision, approved by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), has been implemented under the directive of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The measure comes in response to alarming findings during a recent review of the telecom sector, which revealed that fake SIM cards play a significant role in enabling cybercrime, particularly financial scams. Criminals have been exploiting multiple fake SIM cards linked to a single device, facilitating illegal activities and making detection difficult.

New Safeguards in Place

To counter this, the government now requires telecom retailers to verify the identity of customers through Aadhaar-linked biometric data before issuing SIM cards. This step ensures that every mobile connection is linked to a verified identity, offering better tracking and security.

Retailers failing to comply with the new guidelines, or those caught issuing SIM cards based on fake or forged documents, will face severe legal consequences. Telecom operators have also been instructed to work closely with law enforcement agencies and deploy AI-powered tools to identify and curb fraudulent activities.

Enhanced Mobile Security for Users

The mandatory Aadhaar-based biometric verification is expected to significantly reduce the misuse of mobile connections for cybercrimes and scams. By creating a secure and verifiable system for SIM card issuance, the government aims to enhance mobile security across the country.

Additionally, the Communication Partner Portal has been launched to empower users. The portal allows citizens to file complaints related to cyber fraud and scams and helps block lost or stolen phones, reducing the chances of further misuse.
